Title A name given to the resource AEABB162 Museum ID No. EG727 Description An account of the resource EXTERNAL APPEARANCE Light grey coloured stone coffin with accompanying lid containing the remains of a ibis, the head of which is visible from the open aspect. Much amber coloured resin pieces and masses of bandages are visible surrounding the ibis remains. RADIOGRAPHIC REPORT Radiographed in sections and digitally stitched afterwards. The density of the stone coffin obliterates the detail of the skeletal remains in the X-ray. The CT scan reveals the detail of the stone coffin with a mummy bundle lying within with the head at the widest part. Chunks of resin (visible by eye) are clear on the images, lying on top of the solidified layer. The mummy bundle touches the base at the head end, but is not lying flat at the foot end. At the tail end, there is a layer of fragmentary debris lying beneath the bundle. There is disruption to the linen bandages on the upper aspect ?attempt to unwrap/remove the mummy. Resin has been poured into the coffin on top of and around the bundle, adhering it to the walls. The resin appears similar in density to stone. The bird itself appears to have received a coating of a radiodense substance prior to wrapping and linen has been applied in distinct stages as is common on many animal mummies. The skull appears to have been created from a pad of linen, wrapped within the confines of the outer layer. Bi-colour bandaging with nemes headdress (no face but may have held a portrait originally). Collar consists of parallel strips of linen, four brown, six white, mirroring the design of the headdress. Body is plain though some staining has occurred on the LHS shoulder, presumably resin. False feet. RADIOGRAPHIC REPORT Complete mummy bundle containing the complete and articulated body of an ibis. The bird has been positioned with the beak right down towards the tail end. The bird is much smaller than the mummy bundle suggests. CT shows elongation of the bundle and the addition of false head and feet. There is evidence of a multi-phase wrapping process. Loose matter coming from a ?burn hole in RHS. RADIOGRAPHIC REPORT Complete conical-shaped mummy bundle containing the skeletal remains of an ibis. No skull is visible from the radiographs and there are fractures in some of the long bones, although the skeleton looks in remarkably good condition. CT shows that the thorax is not immediately visible and confirms that no skull is present. The bones present appear to be in complete condition. Some air voids are present where elements have settled when desiccated. Bandaging is frayed and the contents feel loose and mobile. Hole visible, black layer underneath and bone visible. RADIOGRAPHIC REPORT Complete conical-shaped mummy bundle containing fragmentary avian bones consistent in size with an ibis. All elements appear to lack integrity and are not articulated. There is a core of granular material and radiodense anomalies which contains the skeletal elements, many of which have fractured post mortem and are lying at the base. A modern metal conservation pin is visible at the widest point of the bundle. There is a radiodense coating (fractured) around the remains themselves possibly indicating a layer of a resinous substance holding the core together prior to wrapping. This layer appears to be thicker on the upper surface. There is a considerable air void within the bundle where the bones have settled over time. There is a section of articulated spine, but no skull is immediately obvious. No decoration or discernible wrapping pattern. RADIOGRAPHIC REPORT Complete conical-shaped mummy bundle containing a complete ibis. Some of the long bones display post-mummification fractures, possibly through rough handling. The skull isn’t immediately obvious on the reformatted images but is present. There is a high-density linear object in the centre of the bundle, resembling a metal needle. There is a second, high-density anomaly visible near the head of the ‘needle’ which is not part of the same object. Dense granular anomalies are visible throughout the bundle. The inner layers of linen wrappings appear quite haphazard in formation, but the outer layers are smooth. No epiphyses are visible indicating that the bird was skeletally mature at the time of death. Geometric patterning across the body area. RADIOGRAPHIC REPORT Complete mummy bundle modelled in the form of a cat. Radiographs reveal that the bundle contains the remains of a cat, with the skull in the head of the bundle and the body arranged in the characteristic skittle form with the limbs folded down and the head upright. There is some disruption to the skull with some loose elements having fallen to the rear of the cavity. There is a denser liner band around the middle of the bundle and the false ears are clearly visible radiographically. There is disruption in the spinal column. Hole in front area with reeds visible protruding slightly and laid longitudinally. RADIOGRAPHIC REPORT Complete mummy bundle formed in the shape of a jackal with upright ears. The bundle appears to have been formed independently of the contents as they are all loosely placed within it, almost as though they have been poured into the cavity, resulting in air voids in the central area. Epiphyses are visible on some of the long bones indicating that the canid was juvenile at the time of death. No skull is present. A wooden rod has been inserted within the body of the bundle and another placed at right angles to form the false snout. A pad of linen has been positioned on top of the stick to create the height of the cranium. The wrappings around the body are relatively thin. Some of the breast area decoration is lost. RADIOGRAPHIC REPORT Complete mummy bundle modelled in Osirion form with false head and false feet. The radiographs reveal a central core of jumbled material. The radiographs show fragmented incomplete skeletal remains of unidentifiable nature and dense anomalies within the core. Some air-filled structures which resemble feathers are evident in the core. The wrappings have been thickly applied and an air void is visible where the core has settled. There is a dense anomaly within the wrappings on one side of the core – visible in the axial slices. This is likely to represent the highly fragmented and partial remains of a bird, however identification beyond this is not possible. Horizontal striped bandaging. Previously conserved - netting around the body. RADIOGRAPHY REPORT Complete mummy bundle formed in the shape of a cat. The radiographs show the complete and articulated remains of a cat within. The skeleton is arranged in the standard cylindrical form with the front limbs folded down and the rear legs folded up. There is brain matter visible in the rear of the cranial cavity. There appears to be disarticulation in the spinal column. There is a mass of radiodense particles scattered throughout the bundle. Unfused epiphyses are visible on the long bones indicating that the animal was immature at the time of death. There is a large pad of linen on the top of the skull giving height to the modelled head. Title A name given to the resource Algernon Percy, Fourth Duke of Northumberland (1792-1865) Description An account of the resource Following a visit to Egypt in 1826, Duke Algernon Percy was alike many of his counterparts in the mid-nineteenth century and developed a taste for collecting Egyptian antiquities. He proudly displayed these - and British objects - at the family seat of Alnwick Castle. He primarily collected objects through English auctions rather than visits to Egypt, with his collection containing items acquired by James Burton and the British Consul, Henry Salt. The collection remained on display at Alnwick Castle until the mid-1900s, before being removed to the British Museum for conservation before the outbreak of the Second World War. In the 1940s the decision was made to sell the collection. Despite the interest from the British Museum and Brooklyn Museum, the Duke's successors were keen to see the collection stay intact and, if possible, in the North East of England. Thanks to a generous offering from Dr and Mrs H N Spalding, Durham University were able to raise the £12,000 asking price.
