<text>RADIOGRAPHIC REPORT
XR – The bundle appears to be constructed from non-skeletal material - ?linen. There are possibly small bone fragments; however, no identifiable elements are visible. CT – CT confirms that the bundle appears to be largely constructed from linen, which appears dense in places suggesting that resin has been used on the inner layers, presumably to provide rigidity to the form and to act as an adhesive. Areas where air has become trapped within the bundle are visible. There are some irregular opacities in the mid-section towards the distal end of the bundle which do not appear to be skeletal in origin. The central core contains a small number of small inclusions which may be bones fragments or small stones encased within the linen. No diagnostic features suggesting they are definitely bone can be seen. It is possible that the materials used to create this bundle i.e. linen and resinous substance, were somehow important to the mummification process, probably as by-products of the manufacture of votive animal mummies. The shape given to the bundle is characteristic of avian bundles, however no identifiable bone fragments or feathers are visible within this example. The outer layers of bandaging and the application of a final layer of thread applied in concentric circles around the bundle is consistent with both avian votive mummies and pseudo-avian bundles.

No visible epiphyses (possible on distal femur but could be superimposition), although animal is very small. Snout is very long and elongated. CT - inclusions within wrappins which appear radiodense and patches close to surface of animal (natron in fur?). Falses eyes are interesting find not visible in XR. Post-mortem fracture across neck could be desiccation which caused it to snap, but that external wrappings were more flexible and did not fracture. Dimensions of skull more clearly visible on CT than XR due to angle of skull in bundle.

Missing in collection or on display. XR - Human faced mummy with some damage to the mid-section of the bundle. The fabric from which the body shape has been modelled is relatively dnese which suggests that the bandages may have been soaked in resin prior in wrapping. CT shows damage to the mummy bundle well. Likely to be an ancient mummy deduced from the way the bandages have been applied in multiple layers in a similar fashion to others in the collection. The plaster face and coffin have probably been added in the Victorian Period. There is no skeletal material within the bundle but the bandages appear to have been dipped in substance which appears radiodense on the images. The threshold on the CT was set to high to eliminate the bandages at the foot end. This reveals the plaster face and the central core of the mummy bundle.

Radiographs show a complete and articulated skeleton of a mature Falco tinnunculus (Kestrel). CT shows there is no visible brain matter in the cranial cavity. There is evidence for residual internal organ matter in abdominal cavity. A radiodense package in the pelvic region is present, which measures 13.7mm in the sagittal plane by 10.9mm in coronal plane. The beak mandible is intact but the maxilla is damaged and the end is lost. There is a radiodense layer around the body which suggests that the body was coated in a resinous substance.

Radiographs show the complete and articulated skeleton of a Falco tinnunculus (Kestrel). CT shows no visible brain matter in the cranial cavity. There is evidence for residual internal organ matter in abdominal cavity. The head is at an oblique angle in the lateral plane resulting in a twisted spinal column. A radiodense object is visible adjacent to the RHS tibiotarsus. Granular substance and linen wrappings across the chest and tucked behind the wings. This individual was mummified in toto - air voids visible in the wing and tail feathers.

Radiographs show a complete and articulated skeleton of a Falco tinunnculus (Kestrel). Bird is facing to the side of the bundle, rather than upwards as the false head would suggest. The false head and feet are completely modelled from linen. Three fractures in the skeletal remains are visible - likely due to the application of a resinous substance during mummification. Radio-opaque concentric circular layers beneath the outer linen shroud are visible around the bundle from the neck region downwards. CT shows no visible brain matter in the cranial cavity. There is evidence for residual internal organ matter in the abdominal cavity. The bird remains were tightly wrapped in linen before being dipped in a resinous substance, indicated by very dense regions around the body and two fractures in the lower part of the bird remains. The presence of feathers indicates this individual was mummified in toto. Dense anomalies, which could represent artefacts/resin trapped within wrappings (c1663HU (bone would be c250HU) towards the distal end. The outer linen layers are quite thick to create the shape of the bird mummy.

Complete mummy bundle, purported to contain the remains of an ibis. Characteristic conical shape and approximately the right size to contain a bird. The radiographic study showed that the bundle contains isolated fragments of bone. No complete elements are present and there is no evidence of morphologically diagnostic areas to enable an identification. Small round anomalies are visible in the axial CT views suggesting the presence of feather shafts, although they do not appear to have been arranged in such a way as to provide rigidity or support. It is likely that the skeletal fragments belong to an avian individual or multiple individuals due to the external form given to the mummy bundle. The linen appears to be a relatively thin covering surrounding the core made from a granular substance such as mud, into which has been incorporated numerous bony fragments and feathers. A small air void is visible towards the narrow end of the bundle, presumably created as the material desiccated and settled.

Radiographs show a complete and articulated skeleton of an Accipiter nisus (Sparrowhawk). Metal pins have been used to secure the head and feet during a modern conservation attempt. The skeleton is considerably smaller than the mummy bundle itself with the head of the mummy bundle being constructed completely of linen. Interestingly the tarsometatarsus is thicker and longer in this specimen than in others. CT shows there is no brain matter is visible in cranial cavity. There is evidence for residual internal organ matter in the abdominal cavity. Air is visible trapped between the feathers suggesting this individual was mummified in toto.
