XR/CT - contains isolated unidentifiable bone fragments (nothing distinct for ID). There is an area thought to be resin soaked bandages. No visible epiphyses (possible on distal femur but could be superimposition), although animal is very small. Snout is very long and elongated. CT - inclusions within wrappins which appear radiodense and patches close to surface of animal (natron in fur?). Falses eyes are interesting find not visible in XR. Post-mortem fracture across neck could be desiccation which caused it to snap, but that external wrappings were more flexible and did not fracture. Dimensions of skull more clearly visible on CT than XR due to angle of skull in bundle.

XR - largely disarticulated skeleton. Skull vault has collapsed inwards leaving a mass of bone fragments in back of cranium. Neck has been broken (post-mortem) possibly due to plastic strap keeping bundle attached to board. Appears to be small radiodense inclusion within the bundle (metallic flake, sand or stone). CT - clearly shows linen ears and eyes. Evidence that the bundle has been wrapped twice, but no evidence for radiodense coating. 3D reformat of skull may help clarify this.

XR - Bundle is fractured in tail region. Skeleton is much smaller than the bundle (skull placed within modelled body, not head region). False head appears to have a radiodense coating which could be resin or gilding. Appears to be an area of soft-tissue or feathers extraneous to the bird, but is included in bundle wrappings (may be tail of another bird). CT - Thin layer (possibly a single layer) of wrappings round bird which appear radiodense (coating of tar, resin, natron?). Bundle is wrapped again to form a more uniform cylindrical shape with what appear to be rolls of bandaging on each side of neck for support. Bundle appears to have then been rewrapped with inclusion of denser material (possibly wax) laid intentionally in a row within the wrappings.

Radiography shows that this bundle, modeled in the form of a complete crocodile, contains what appears to be incomplete skeletal remains. The body form has been modeled from an organic substance which has cracked upon desiccation. A multi-phase mummification is seen – with the central core containing the upper part of a crocodile surrounded by reeds, visible in the transverse sections as hollow tubular structures. The organic matter appears very radiodense suggesting that a resinous substance was incorporated into the core, possibly to consolidate the material and enable it to be formed more efficiently.

Complete and articulated skeleton of a hawk with intact talons and tip of the beak visible. Presented in the standard body position – wings folded in close to the body, legs outstretched and crossed. The neck is broken in the region of the cervical spine; however, this is most likely due to the mummification process which has caused the skull to be forced down upon the breastbone leading to an awkward appearance. This may have been caused when the bundle was wrapped as has been seen in one of the experimental mummies created at the KNH Centre. There is a mass in the abdominal cavity, visible on the CT reformat, which is consistent in appearance with visceral contents indicating that the bird was not eviscerated. Numerous dense anomalies are visible (by the neck and the legs) thought to be small stones which became trapped within the mummy bundle through the mummification process. <text>RADIOGRAPHIC REPORT
At first glance this mummy bundle, presented lying within a crude wooden coffin trough, appears to contain a complete feline skeleton. However, on closer inspection, the skull and torso appear to be joined, not by the cervical spine, but by a wooden implement which is imbedded deep within the wrappings and must have been intentionally used to join the body prior to the mummification process. This is not clearly visible on the X-rays so this highlights the importance of CT scanning to add further information on construction techniques. The wrappings around much of the body appear to be fairly loose. The skull appears to have suffered extensive damage causing many of the skeletal elements to fall to the base, leaving the outline of the bandages indicating that the body had desiccated prior to being damaged. The lower body appears to be disarticulated, but it predominantly the right anatomical position. The lower limbs appear to show un-fused or partially fused epiphyses, indicating that this animal was juvenile or sub-adult at the time of death. A dense metallic ring is visible radiographically beneath the mummy but within the coffin trough (modern conservation label). The base of the coffin displays a square hole towards the lower end of the cat mummy (make a note of this in case debris is being lost from the mummy through the hole). Tree rings are visible in the wood of the coffin, along with granular densities of unknown origin which appear to lie within the wood. There is a modern metallic conservation pin through the neck region.

These are likely to be natural inclusions in the clay and appear as radiodense anomalies in the ceramic material. The images showed the presence of the contents firmly affixed to the pot. X-ray and CT both highlighted the presence of bone fragments, thought to be from a bird as is consistent with the pot burial. No diagnostic skeletal elements could be isolated from the images, so identification beyond ‘avian’ is not possible in this case.

Complete mummy bundle, purported to contain the remains of an ibis. Characteristic conical shape and approximately the right size to contain a bird. The radiographic study showed that the bundle contains isolated fragments of bone. No complete elements are present and there is no evidence of morphologically diagnostic areas to enable an identification. Small round anomalies are visible in the axial CT views suggesting the presence of feather shafts, although they do not appear to have been arranged in such a way as to provide rigidity or support. It is likely that the skeletal fragments belong to an avian individual or multiple individuals due to the external form given to the mummy bundle. The linen appears to be a relatively thin covering surrounding the core made from a granular substance such as mud, into which has been incorporated numerous bony fragments and feathers. A small air void is visible towards the narrow end of the bundle, presumably created as the material desiccated and settled.

                <text>RADIOGRAPHIC REPORT
XR - Complete skeleton of a feline. Displaced fracture through the cervical spine, cranium, and frontal region of the face. The neck fracture would appear to be post-mummification (and most likely historic) as the wrappings appear to be displaced in the correlating position. The skeleton is positioned in the characteristic fashion and is tightly bound; rear limbs folded up and the front limbs positioned flat against the chest and abdomen. There are no visible signs of pathology or age-indicators. It is clear from the XR that the cat has been given modeled false ears which appear quite dense - ?resin or paint? A metallic band is visible around the cervical spine which may have caused the fracture. It appears from the external aspects that there is a layer of string wrapped concentrically round the bundle. There is a radio-dense anomaly in the scapula region ?stone/sand particle. CT – CT confirms the radiographic assessment. The displaced fracture through the cervical spine appears to have also caused fractures through the adjacent desiccated soft-tissues indicating that the damage occurred post-desiccation and most likely as a result of the metallic band being applied to the bundle. Extensive disruption to the skull is visible. No evidence of internal organs or abdominal packing can be seen in the abdominal cavity indicating that, if the body was eviscerated, no extraneous material was placed within the cavity to provide support. Unfused epiphyses can be seen on the limb bones indicating that the animal was immature at the time of death.

                <text>RADIOGRAPHIC REPORT
XR – The bundle appears to be constructed from non-skeletal material - ?linen. There are possibly small bone fragments; however, no identifiable elements are visible. CT – CT confirms that the bundle appears to be largely constructed from linen, which appears dense in places suggesting that resin has been used on the inner layers, presumably to provide rigidity to the form and to act as an adhesive. Areas where air has become trapped within the bundle are visible. There are some irregular opacities in the mid-section towards the distal end of the bundle which do not appear to be skeletal in origin. The central core contains a small number of small inclusions which may be bones fragments or small stones encased within the linen. No diagnostic features suggesting they are definitely bone can be seen. It is possible that the materials used to create this bundle i.e. linen and resinous substance, were somehow important to the mummification process, probably as by-products of the manufacture of votive animal mummies. The shape given to the bundle is characteristic of avian bundles, however no identifiable bone fragments or feathers are visible within this example. The outer layers of bandaging and the application of a final layer of thread applied in concentric circles around the bundle is consistent with both avian votive mummies and pseudo-avian bundles.
