<text>An unwrapped mummy bundle through an upper aspect incision. The inner layer of bandages are darker, whilst the outer layers are lighter. 35-40 layers are estimated. The distal end is relatively well preserved, with a diamond lozenge pattern visible on the exterior towards the false feet. The remains of a bird of prey are contained within the linen. Some feathers are evident and some soft tissue is preserved, indicating this individual was mummified in toto.

Radiographs show the partially disarticulated and incomplete remains of Falco tinnunculus (Kestrel). Bird remains are missing from the distal ends of the tarsometatarsus (with multiple fractures on RHS; clean on LHS) downwards. Both wings appear articulated, possibly articulated to the spinal column and ribs, although there is a clean break in the cervical vertebrae, separating the head from the body. CT No brain matter is visible in cranial cavity. There is possibly some evidence for residual internal organ matter in the abdominal cavity. CT confirms the level of disarticulation described in the radiographs and it is evident that tail feathers are preserved within the linen. This further confirms the individual was mummified in toto.

Radiographs show MNI=>1. Incomplete and disarticulated avian skeleton consisting of a partial wing, partial leg and partial leg from a smaller bird. Several radiodense areas within the bundle, possibly representing resinous substances. The modelled head is formed completely of linen. CT shows the bundle is constructed primarily of linen, of which the wrappings are very thick in the anterior aspect. Linen rolls have been placed either side of central core/roll to provide support with looser wrappings around them. Layer of thick wrappings placed on top of looser material underneath. The core consists of skeletal material: the wing and leg are articulated and the feathers remain attached to the wing, suggesting mummification in toto. The bones belonging to the smaller bird appear to be a wing also. The visible package measures 25.2mm in coronal plane and 1.5 in sagittal. One dense anomaly (c1790HU) is similar to metal. Another registers 1246HU (1.4mm sag and 9.5mm cor). Many air voids in bundle.

Radiographs show the complete skeleton of an ibis species, likely Threskiornis aethiopicus (Sacred Ibis). Evidence of disruption of the spinal column and thoracic cavity including the ribs. Head placed between the legs of the birds - possibly detached? Radiodense area at the base shows where resin has settled, but incorporates a hard light coloured substance used to secure the bundle as part of a conservation effort. CT shows there is no brain matter is visible in cranial cavity. The bird remains are predominantly articulated with the exception of the thoracic and abdominal areas, where CT shows disarticulated ribs, vertebrae and soft tissue, possibly the remains of the viscera. Feathers are visible in CT images, which suggests the individual was mummified in toto. The false head and neck are constructed entirely from linen.

Radiographs show the the semi-articulated, yet fragmented remains of an ibis species, likely Threskiornis aethiopicus (Sacred Ibis). The radiographs are quite radiodense over the bird remains, indicating the use of a resinous substance. CT shows that the bird remains appear to have been articulated at the time of mummification, although this is not the case now, particularly in the thoracic and abdominal region and the wings. The ribs and most of the vertebrae are 'floating' within the bundle core where an air void has been created towards the upper aspect of the bundle, due to the collapse of the thoracic and abdominal cavities. Some of the skull remains and was attached to some cervical vertebrae, which has remained in situ. A beak is not clearly visible. The leg bones form the distal end of the bundle suggesting that the intended skeletal position for this ibis was in a seated position with the neck folded towards the legs. It is thought this individual was mummified in toto, although it is not possible to tell due to the lack of articulation and clear air voids created by the feather shafts. The resinous substance is visible on the surface of the bird remains as a once molten, now solidified material, which fractures in characteristic angular patterns.

Radiographs show a complete and articulated skeleton of Felis silvestris libyca (wildcat), which has become compressed due to tight bandaging. CT indicates a mature individual based on the lack of growth plates and small dimensions of the bundle. It is possible that the growth plates may have become detached (may be present, but not in correct anatomical position), due to the level of compression applied to the animal remains by the linen. The individual appears articulated and complete, although there may be some damage to the skull.

The body is constructed of different sections of linen used to make up the outer layers, including a folded ribbon piece of linen circumventing the bundle from the neck downwards. It is unknown if this was the intended out layer of the mummy bundle.

Radiographs show the mummy bundle is in two sections with the neck area lost. Skull has been crushed extensively and the body is disarticulated. The wrappings are thick and there is an empty area in the lower part of the bundle where there are no bones. Evidence for post-mortem fractures. Lower legs are bent upwards. CT shows the bundle is very tightly wrapped <2.4cm in places. Individual is immature with growth plates visible in long bones. A Felid canine tooth is visible in the wrappings but distinctly separate from the body material. Density of the empty are at the base is -706: ?air or ?sand.

                <text>RADIOGRAPHIC REPORT
XR - Complete skeleton of a feline. Displaced fracture through the cervical spine, cranium, and frontal region of the face. The neck fracture would appear to be post-mummification (and most likely historic) as the wrappings appear to be displaced in the correlating position. The skeleton is positioned in the characteristic fashion and is tightly bound; rear limbs folded up and the front limbs positioned flat against the chest and abdomen. There are no visible signs of pathology or age-indicators. It is clear from the XR that the cat has been given modeled false ears which appear quite dense - ?resin or paint? A metallic band is visible around the cervical spine which may have caused the fracture. It appears from the external aspects that there is a layer of string wrapped concentrically round the bundle. There is a radio-dense anomaly in the scapula region ?stone/sand particle. CT – CT confirms the radiographic assessment. The displaced fracture through the cervical spine appears to have also caused fractures through the adjacent desiccated soft-tissues indicating that the damage occurred post-desiccation and most likely as a result of the metallic band being applied to the bundle. Extensive disruption to the skull is visible. No evidence of internal organs or abdominal packing can be seen in the abdominal cavity indicating that, if the body was eviscerated, no extraneous material was placed within the cavity to provide support. Unfused epiphyses can be seen on the limb bones indicating that the animal was immature at the time of death.

X-rays show the complete and articulated remains of a cat, positioned in the characteristic ‘skittle’ shape, which completely fill the bundle. No epiphyses are visible, indicating that this animal had reached skeletal maturity at the time of death. There is a fracture in the cervical spine. This correlates with an air void and a fracture which appears to transect the bundle at the same point, indicating that the spinal fracture is likely to have occurred post-mummification when the body had desiccated. The skull is complete. The sagittal reformats show that the tail has been broken to allow it to be curled round and up through the hind legs (it appears as to be unnaturally right-angled in the images). One rib appears to have been displaced and is lying at the rear. The facial features appear modelled with the addition of false ears. There is some padding on top of the skull which appears to have been formed from a pad of rolled linen. There is some material within the eye sockets and in the rear of the cranium; however, this cannot be clearly identified from the scan data. There appears to be a dense material in the mouth and the coronal scan shows similar density material to either side of the skull, just below the false ears.

There is a dense pad on top of the skull, used to create height for the modelled face. The skull has experienced some post-desiccation damage. The femoral heads appear to have become dislocated form the pelvis, presumably during the mummification process, when the body was being manipulated into position. The head lies at an unnatural angle due to some misalignment in the cervical spine, again likely caused when the body was manipulated.
