Radiographs show the the semi-articulated, yet fragmented remains of an ibis species, likely Threskiornis aethiopicus (Sacred Ibis). The radiographs are quite radiodense over the bird remains, indicating the use of a resinous substance. CT shows that the bird remains appear to have been articulated at the time of mummification, although this is not the case now, particularly in the thoracic and abdominal region and the wings. The ribs and most of the vertebrae are 'floating' within the bundle core where an air void has been created towards the upper aspect of the bundle, due to the collapse of the thoracic and abdominal cavities. Some of the skull remains and was attached to some cervical vertebrae, which has remained in situ. A beak is not clearly visible. The leg bones form the distal end of the bundle suggesting that the intended skeletal position for this ibis was in a seated position with the neck folded towards the legs. It is thought this individual was mummified in toto, although it is not possible to tell due to the lack of articulation and clear air voids created by the feather shafts. The resinous substance is visible on the surface of the bird remains as a once molten, now solidified material, which fractures in characteristic angular patterns. Incomplete and disarticulated avian skeleton consisting of a partial wing, partial leg and partial leg from a smaller bird. Several radiodense areas within the bundle, possibly representing resinous substances. The modelled head is formed completely of linen. CT shows the bundle is constructed primarily of linen, of which the wrappings are very thick in the anterior aspect. Linen rolls have been placed either side of central core/roll to provide support with looser wrappings around them. Layer of thick wrappings placed on top of looser material underneath. The core consists of skeletal material: the wing and leg are articulated and the feathers remain attached to the wing, suggesting mummification in toto. The bones belonging to the smaller bird appear to be a wing also. The visible package measures 25.2mm in coronal plane and 1.5 in sagittal. One dense anomaly (c1790HU) is similar to metal. Another registers 1246HU (1.4mm sag and 9.5mm cor). Many air voids in bundle. Bird remains are missing from the distal ends of the tarsometatarsus (with multiple fractures on RHS; clean on LHS) downwards. Both wings appear articulated, possibly articulated to the spinal column and ribs, although there is a clean break in the cervical vertebrae, separating the head from the body. CT No brain matter is visible in cranial cavity. There is possibly some evidence for residual internal organ matter in the abdominal cavity. CT confirms the level of disarticulation described in the radiographs and it is evident that tail feathers are preserved within the linen. This further confirms the individual was mummified in toto. Radio-opaque concentric circular layers beneath the outer linen shroud are visible around the bundle from the neck region downwards. CT shows no visible brain matter in the cranial cavity. There is evidence for residual internal organ matter in the abdominal cavity. The bird remains were tightly wrapped in linen before being dipped in a resinous substance, indicated by very dense regions around the body and two fractures in the lower part of the bird remains. The presence of feathers indicates this individual was mummified in toto. Dense anomalies, which could represent artefacts/resin trapped within wrappings (c1663HU (bone would be c250HU) towards the distal end.
