Description
A complete conical mummy bundle with diamond lozenge design in dark and medium brown linen. A false head has been added representing an ibis wearing an Atef crown.
Radiographs show the complete skeleton of an ibis species, likely Threskiornis aethiopicus (Sacred Ibis). Evidence of disruption of the spinal column and thoracic cavity including the ribs. Head placed between the legs of the birds - possibly detached? Radiodense area at the base shows where resin has settled, but incorporates a hard light coloured substance used to secure the bundle as part of a conservation effort. CT shows there is no brain matter is visible in cranial cavity. The bird remains are predominantly articulated with the exception of the thoracic and abdominal areas, where CT shows disarticulated ribs, vertebrae and soft tissue, possibly the remains of the viscera. Feathers are visible in CT images, which suggests the individual was mummified in toto. The false head and neck are constructed entirely from linen.
