Description
Tightly wrapped bird mummy bundle with painted Horus facial features and false feet.
Radiographs show a complete and articulated skeleton of an Accipiter nisus (Sparrowhawk). Metal pins have been used to secure the head and feet during a modern conservation attempt. The skeleton is considerably smaller than the mummy bundle itself with the head of the mummy bundle being constructed completely of linen. Interestingly the tarsometatarsus is thicker and longer in this specimen than in others. CT shows there is no brain matter is visible in cranial cavity. There is evidence for residual internal organ matter in the abdominal cavity. Air is visible trapped between the feathers suggesting this individual was mummified in toto.
